Only got 24 hours in Florence? Here’s what we got up to with only one day to explore the city.
Il Duomo
The number one stop for your Florence visit has to be the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore or Il Duomo. Because of the huge crowds we decided to only admire the beautiful (and massive!) building from the outside, but if you go during offseason you should definitely consider going inside the basilica. The entrance is free, and if you wanna go to the top of the tower it’s 10 euros.
Ponte Vecchio
The next stop is the medieval bridge Ponte Vecchio, which crosses the Arno River and has jewellery and souvenir shops all along it.
Boboli Gardens
After having crossed the bridge you wanna continue walking straight for one block, and you’ll find yourself at the Palazzo Pitti. From here you can enter the Boboli Gardens, which is a huge garden that serves as the home to a huge collection of sculptures from the 16th through 18th century, along with a few Roman antiquities. Apart from being an incredibly beautiful walk, the gardens also have the most beautiful views of the city.
The David statue
Florence is also the home of Michelangelo’s David statue. The statue is located in Galleria dell’Academia, and if you’re into art, this is definitely worth a visit. You should just be warned that the lines are ridiculously long, and you’re basically only paying to see the David statue. The rest of the exhibition is kinda blah. Instead you should head to Palazzo Vecchio where you’ll find a replica where the original used to be located.
Eat!
Visiting Italy is not complete without the food! No matter the weather you definitely wanna treat yourself to some Italian gelato. As for a proper meal, you should find some pizza. Just a block away from the basilica you’ll find Mangia Pizza, which is a super cool pizzeria where you’ll both find a few classics, but also some more modern pizzas. We had a zucchini flower and almond pizza, and a pear and gorgonzola one, and they were probably the best pizzas I’ve ever had!
Have you ever been to Florence? What else should a first timer see?
